family history gem

I've been working on my family tree and came across this gem online last week. This is My Great Great Grandfather, Charles (Carl) Waldemere Buchholz's Form for Naturalization, from 1877. Notice that it predates the use of photography in this kind of documentation and instead uses fill-in-the-blank to describe his facial features.

Miss Broughton Swings

"Miss P Broughton in swing, full length, white dress, nearly full face, shoe on", 1892 – photograph by William Edward Downey (1855-1908). Phyllis Broughton (1862-1926) was an actress and dancer who found fame through her appearances at the Gaiety Theatre on Aldwych in London, home of the "Gaiety Girls".

I Harsten observation: "I suspect that in practice the swing was hanging straight down, vertical, and that the dress and her scarf very arranged in clever ways, in order to give this impression of movement. And that the background also was turned, accordingly. Extremely clever, extremely creative, and well thought out."
